HOWTO: ALTER
File Format Of Camera Images
Alter from the default HEIC (which while very file efficient many people do not seem to be able to open!) to JPEG.
Launch the Settings app Tap Photos Tap Automatic. This setting is found at the very bottom of the screen under Transfer to Mac or PC
Thanks to iMore.
HOWTO: DISABLE
Automatic Sleep Mode
How to turn off Sleep Mode on iPhone...
- Go to Apple's Health app on your iPhone.
- Tab the Browse tab and select Sleep listed under Health Categories.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the Sleep screen and tap Options.
- Turn off the toggle next to Turn On Automatically under Sleep Mode.
Live Photos - Permanently

- Preserve Settings
- Change the button next to Live Photo is turned on (showing green) (yes, turning something on to turn something off is counterintuitive).
HOWTO:
Custom Ringtone
AAC files created in iTunes or Music use the file extension .m4a by default, however, the file must have an m4r extension to be recognized as a ringtone by your iPhone.
To convert most formats with a built-in macOS utility ...
afconvert -f m4af -d aac -o
.m4r
METHOD 1
- Drag and drop the M4R file into the GENERAL area when you have your iPhone connected to your macOS device
- On iPhone: Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone. You should now see them in the list.
METHOD 2
The only native method I've found for iOS 17 (that does not require using a Mac or PC) is via GarageBand:
- Save M4R to Files
- Open GarageBand and tap the + icon
- Scroll Audio Recorder and tap Voice
- Tap the Tracks view icon (looks kind of like an I Ching hexagram) at top left
- Tap the Loops icon (looks like a loop of string) at top right
- Tap on the Files tab at top center then tap "Browse items from the Files app"
- Tap your M4R file in Recents (tap Browse to locate it if it's not in Recents)
- Tap and start dragging the M4R filename, which will bring the Track view back up - drop the M4R at the top left corner
- Tap the metronome icon to turn it off
- Optional: Tap the + symbol at the top right corner, tap Section A, uncheck Automatic, and set length as desired
- Tap the drop-down arrow at top left, then tap My Songs
- Tap and hold the project you just created, tap Share, tap Ringtone, enter desired name, then tap Export.
- When "Ringtone Export Successful" appears, you'll have the option to tap "Use sound as..." then select "Standard Ringtone", "Standard Text Tone", or "Assign to contact".
METHOD 3
- Make tone with whatever software you use
- Copy tone onto desktop
- Use online converter to change mp3 to m4r (or it may be possible in your software)
- Save m4r to desktop or any folder of your choosing
- Plug iPhone into Mac
- Open Music app (iTunes doesn't exist anymore)
- Click on iPhone from the menu on the left
- Click Sync Settings tab in top right corner
- Click and drag the m4r file onto the iPhone picture in top left corner (it will show a green +)
- When you do this the sync automatically happens. You'll see it happen in the sync bar.
- DO NOT click on SYNC for the whole iPhone!
- On iPhone: Go to Settings>Sounds>Ringtones. You should now see them in the list.

Back Up To An External Drive
- On your external hard drive, create a new folder where you want the backup to go. Name it something you’ll remember, like “iPhoneBackup.”
- Open a new Finder window, then tap Command+Shift+G. Enter this in the box that pops up ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/ then find the folder named “Backup.”
- Copy the “Backup” folder to the folder you made in Step 1. Then, rename the original Backup folder “Backup-Old.” If you need to conserve space, you can delete the “Backup-Old” folder once you verify your backups are working in iTunes.
- Launch Terminal and type in the following command, replacing the “ExternalHardDriveName” with the info for your external hard drive:
ln -s /Volumes/ExternalHardDriveName/iPhoneBackup/Backup/ ~/Library/Application\ Support/MobileSync
- Go ahead and open up iTunes, connect your iOS device, and back up your iOS device as you normally would. The backup file should now be on your external hard drive.
