Installation - Ubuntu Linux: How To

Steam can be installed via the Software Centre but it does require setting up an Ubuntu One account, if you do not want to use the service then just head over to Steam's website.

With any luck the website will recognise you are running Linux and display an 'Install Steam' button towards the top right hand side of the web page. If not just click on the 'Linux' section and that 'Install Steam' button should now be visible. Click through to the next page and download the .deb file.

Once downloaded you can either install the .deb file via the command line, see here, or if you and GDebi installed you can just right click on the installer and select 'Open with GDebi Package Installer'.

Installing from Disc instead of Steam

Using Steam launch options to install retail games from disc.

  1. Install the latest version of Steam first (see above).
  2. Log in to Steam and click on Library.
  3. Right-click on the game, select Delete local content, and confirm.
  4. Insert the first disc into your computer.
  5. Close Steam (Steam > Exit).
  6. Press Windows Key + R to open Run
  7. In the Run window type: "C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -install D:
  8. Replace D: with the CD/DVD drive you are installing from if is not correct.
  9. Replace C:\Program Files\Steam if your Steam installation is not in the default location.
  10. Press OK. Steam will launch and ask you to sign in if you do not have your password saved. Your installation should continue from the disc.

Thanks to Steam Support.
